Can Electric Bikes Get Wet?

Perhaps you tested an electric bike while on vacation and loved how easy it was to use. Maybe you saw a coworker cruising to work with ease on a lightweight electric bike, or maybe you’re interested in reducing your carbon footprint while living an active lifestyle. 

If you live in an area where it rains most of the year, never fear. Electric bikes are totally safe to operate in the rain. In fact, e-bikes are popular in some of the wettest places on Earth! For example, China is host to one of the soggiest cities out there–Emei Shan, in Sichuan Province–yet, forty-one million electric bikes were sold in the Chinese market in 2021. 

E-bikes are also growing in popularity in the United States. In Hawaii, a state that experiences heavy rainfall, the market for e-bikes has sky-rocketed. 

E-Bikes and Weather

Don’t be deterred by the word electric in the name electric bikes. E-bikes can be operated safely and effectively in various terrains and weather conditions. 

Winter Riding

It is safe to ride your e-bike in cold weather and in freezing temperatures, but there are a few things you will want to keep in mind:

• Freezing Temperatures: E-bikes will operate in temperatures as low as five degrees below zero, but these temperatures can damage the battery. The battery will not charge at temperatures below thirty-two degrees and can be damaged if stored in spaces below that temperature. Bring your bike or battery inside with you and charge it indoors to avoid damaging your battery.
• Ice: Riding in icy conditions can be risky no matter your mode of transportation. Riding your e-bike in icy conditions can expose the bike to road salt, which can rust some hardware on your bike. To avoid corrosion, wipe down your bike after you arrive at your destination. 
• Safety:  Depending on the conditions where you’re riding, you will want to invest in accessories for winter weather. Studded tires can be very helpful when biking through the snow and ice, mitigating the risk of sliding and accidents.

Rain

Most e-bikes are equipped for the rain. Many popular models have a high-quality, water-resistant casing around the battery. The bike’s mechanical system (connection points, motor, battery, etc.) is designed with closed units to protect it from rain and other wet weather conditions.

However, being water-resistant does not mean it is waterproof. It is not advisable to ride an e-bike on heavily flooded roads or through deep puddles that can submerge the electrical components. 

Make sure you have the proper gear for rainy weather. Waterproof or water-resistant bike gear with reflectors and bike lights will help keep you dry and visible in rainy weather.

Other Inclement Weather

Much like biking on ice, it is recommended you use special tires for riding through the snow. These tires have a broader surface area and should be used to help you move through the snow with greater ease. Studded tires will help your bike grip slippery surfaces too.

E-bikes are extremely versatile. They can be foldable, like some traditional bikes, and can be used in streets and on bike paths. Here are some safety tips for using your e-bike in any type of foul weather:

• Wear a helmet and other safety gear.
• Adorn your bike with lights, mirrors, and other safety devices. These are helpful in general and for riding at night or poor weather conditions. You need to be visible to cars on the road, because they are going to be distracted during inclement weather.
• Plan ahead. Make sure you have the right tire pressure before hitting the road and check the weather forecast in advance to prepare your bike accordingly.

All of this may leave you wondering whether electric bikes are worth it–research says that they are a good investment, but you need to do your own research. It is important to know whether or not an e-bike fits your current lifestyle or the one you hope to adopt. It’s also important to know what to look for in an electric bike to determine if it’s a good fit for you.
