FAQ'S

minus plus
What are the benefits of folding bikes? minus plus

Folding electric bikes offer a multitude of benefits for urban commuters and outdoor enthusiasts. Their compact design allows for easy storage and transport, making them ideal for crowded city living or trips with limited space. The Portola’s powerful motor reduces the effort required for commuting and extends the range of your rides. Folding ebikes emit zero emissions and reduce your carbon footprint. Overall, the Portola folding electric bike offers a practical, sustainable, and health-conscious transportation solution in today’s world where conserving space and energy is a priority. To lean more, read our article on the benefits of folding ebikes.

Can you change the classes on the Portola? minus plus

Yes you can! The Portola folding ebike arrives in Class 2 out-of-the-box. You can easily change between a Class 1, 2, or 3 ebike through the handlebar display. This offers various benefits where you may need to limit your speed and capabilities depending on the where you are riding.

Can I test ride a bike? minus plus

We are a direct-to-consumer company both in pricing and strategy. You will generally pay a premium for the ability to test ride through a dealer. However, our bikes have been thoroughly tested by top reviewers such as Electric Bike Review, Electric Bike Report, Cycling Weekly, Clean Technica, Electrek and many others who have published their reviews on YouTube. Additionally, we are now supporting an independent network of owners offering their bikes for demos. Learn more here Locations

What can I expect ordering a bike from Ride1UP? minus plus

This article will explain all about what to expect when ordering a bike from us. Ordering With Us

Can I upgrade the battery? minus plus

Unfortunately the 14ah battery pack is the largest available that will fit this frame.

Can I switch the handlebars to another model? minus plus

No. The variations you see on the site are the only options we have.

Can you ship to _______? minus plus

We only ship within the US and Canada. The contiguous United States is FREE. Hawaii and Alaska is $600. Shipping to Canada is $100. We are not responsible for any additional tariffs charged by your local government which often times applied after importing. Unfortunately, we are not able to ship our bikes directly to Europe. You can use a shipping forwarder like ShopUsa.com to reach your country.

Are the bikes water-proof? minus plus

The bikes are not water-proof, they are water-resistant. While we do not recommend leaving the bikes out in the rain or riding in the rain or other hazardous conditions due to personal safety, the bikes can handle low pressure exposure to water. Do not submerge in water or expose to pressurized air or water. Storing your ebike in the elements could shorten the lifespan of the electric bike.

Would like you like to become an E-Bike Mechanic? Neither do I! Unfortunately, to take proper care of this Portola, you require some type of tooling, mechanical aptitude OR more money for this E-Bike. Pros and Cons: Pros - It rides. Cons - NOT 28MpH (Barely Achieves 25MpH), Comes squeaking/crackling straight out the box, Kick Stand WILL get lost (Cost $30+ just to replace), handling is iffy, Removal of fenders is a nuisance, heavy/awkward carry, loud motor, inspection of ALL parts (background knowledge of bicycles almost seems like a must) for no damage of components, protection of parts out-the-box does not protect IMPORTANT components. I lost the kick-stand about my 2nd ride in (DURING TRANSIT) and didn't even know until I got to my destination and due to this have accidentally dropped my E-bike multiple times, even though it seems like they could've fixed the peg to the stand (They try charging you for a replacement)

I have only had the bike out 3 times and it now has 65 miles on it. So far it runs good. It folds up easily. It does have a scratch on the key area as shown on the attached picture. It is a scratch from the handlebar rubbing against when folded. Maybe a plastic piece around the key area would have helped. The assembly from the box went well except I had to watch a YouTube video to get the handlebar assembly correct. But I like how it rides and I like how it looks. So that's all I can say for now.

Battery failed after 56 miles. Charger works fine on our other Portola which has had the same storage (inside, not left on charger, etc.) so it's the battery. Customer support blamed storage degradation and refused to help. Not even a discount offered for a $2K repeat customer. Don't expect support if your battery fails outside the warranty window. Other than the battery, haven't had other major issues besides a wobble on the stem that was easily fixed.

Have only had the bike a week so not much to report yet, but take note - if you are looking at Indigo - the bike is NOT indigo. I would call it more charcoal with a hint of green. I brought this to Support via email and they basically blew me off blaming color variations. Anyone knows how paint is mixed, it's a pretty simple process. Based on the condescending responses I've received, I would hesitate to purchase from Ride1Up again. Compare the color of my bike to the color to the color they show on the website.

Bought this for my wife and she loves it. Easy to maneuver and easy to stow away in the back of our suv. Range is excellent and plenty of power to boot. Tires are a bit noisy for her since she's 99.9% on paved trail and streets. But we're taking this to Sedona and the tires on there should be just fine. Would have liked to see the reflective tires on the Portola. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an affordable folding, step-through ebike. I would definitely buy from Ride1up again.

Bought two Portola in fall of 2024 and been using them since. Great quality, a bit heavy, but manageable without the battery. So much tork with those motors! No hill is too steep, I use it with level 1 or 2 assist and 3 or 4 in the hills. Rarely with level 5. It goes too fast! The combination of 8 speed and 5 level of e-assist gives you flexibility for any terrain. Front suspension is great. I should have added the seat suspension, as I did for my wife. Overall great bike, solid, strong, cheap for what you get. Two bikes fit in my camper garage side by side without folding. The throttle is used for start, or to give a kick when needed. I choose the big battery and I recharge it twice a year. Detailer is good and precise. Comes fully adjusted out of the box. Easy to assemble. 5'-9" and the seat is at maximum height. Handles are at fixed height.

    Portla eBike: 2-Year & 6,074-Mile Review
    Overview
After two years and 6,074 miles of riding on busy New Jersey streets, the Portla eBike has proven to be an exceptionally reliable commuter.
    Key Performance & Maintenance Highlights
Reliability: Zero mechanical breakdowns. The only issues encountered were four flat tires caused by nails and thorns (I strongly recommend adding Slime to the inner tubes for puncture protection).
Drivetrain & Brakes: Only a single shifting adjustment has been needed, and replacing the brake pads was a straightforward, easy process.
    Tires:
Original knobby tires: Very noisy and extremely difficult to break loose from the rim during removal.
Current slick tires: Much easier to remove, though they result in a slightly harder ride due to stiffer sidewalls.
Safety Upgrades for Busy City Riding
To safely navigate heavy traffic, several aftermarket safety accessories were added:
Dual mirrors for increased situational awareness
    Rear radar system
High-visibility, bright daytime flashing lights on both the front and rear.

Got a Portola, and want another. The bike is awesome. But I want a color that is out of stock right now. You know who I am….call or email me.

    Sizing/Fit Notes:

It's a small cruiser style bike. Great for localized transit in my opinion. I'm still in a testing phase, but I already know it's worth it. There was an issue with a headlight wire as soon as we got the Portola, but because of the warranty, it was resolved extremely quickly. This is not a kiddie bike meant for sport...but it does have torque. I nominally hit 20 mph, and I'm fine with that. (I don't like to pedal past starting off. Think moped). I don't have to lift my leg to get on or off. And I don't have to worry about getting tired for long distance traveling (relative to what I use the bike for, which is becoming more and more cheaper than driving my car. I might just sell that. Because I've used the Portola more than my car since I bought it.). The Portola is a game changer. But it's basic. Different folks, different strokes. Look at Ride1up's inventory. There's something there for whatever your style is.

The battery should not fail after 56 miles! I am very sorry to hear about this experience. It is covered under warranty during the period. They should also offer you a discount if just outside the warranty. Thank you for your feedback.
