Are All Electric Bikes Pedal-Assist?

Whether you are a commuter, a weekend warrior, or an avid cyclist, electric bicycles offer a unique and versatile cycling experience. Not only do they make riding more manageable, but they still offer all the health benefits of traditional bikes.

Maybe this is not new information to you–maybe you’re looking for the best beach cruiser e-bike, or maybe you already own one and have a few questions, like how to lock an electric bike, or if electric bikes can be used manually

In this article, we’re going to get you some answers, starting with how an e-bike’s standard pedal-assist feature works, as most will come with this ability.

What Makes an E-Bike Different?

An electric bike is like a traditional bicycle with a twist. E-bikes come equipped with an integrated electric motor that assists the rider and is powered by a rechargeable battery.

The biggest difference between an e-bike and a regular bike comes down to this motor. It gives the rider assistance with pedaling so that they don’t have to pedal as hard or for as long as they would to get the same result on a traditional bike.

While differences in e-bikes exist depending on the manufacturer and model, most e-bikes come with pedal-assistance. A pedal-assist electric bike is, simply put, a bike that gives the rider an extra boost of power while they are pedaling.

Throttle Versus Pedal-Assist

When people think of electric bikes, there is the tendency to assume that electric bikes operate on their own and that the rider does not have to pedal. With a pedal-assist electric bike, the rider still has to pedal. Depending on the model and make, most e-bikes come equipped with several settings for pedal-assist. The higher the power setting, the more assistance the motor will provide. Of course, the more power you use, the quicker your battery depletes.

When you’re shopping for an e-bike, be sure not to confuse pedal-assist with a throttle. While all e-bikes come with pedal-assist, only some come with a throttle. Some come with both, but, again, it depends on the make and model of your e-bike.

To understand throttle, it’s helpful to think of an electric scooter. You press a button, the motor starts, and you move forward. An e-bike throttle functions in the same way. Some e-bikes have a twist throttle, and others have a button. Unlike pedal-assist, which requires the rider to pedal, a throttle speeds the bike forward and gives the rider the option of whether or not they want to pedal.

Of course, if you’re unsure of whether or not you need pedal-assist or want to find out if an electric bike with this feature is something you’ll enjoy, be sure to reach out to the professionals at Ride1UP for help. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have when it comes to riding electric bikes, how they work, and what model may be best for you.
