What Size Battery Is Best for an Electric Bike?

E-bike popularity has continued to grow. If you ask any e-bike enthusiast to name the most important components of an e-bike, the first thing almost everyone would say is ‘the battery.’ It’s not only the type of battery that matters, but its size also factors into a smooth and hassle-free ride.

Sometimes, those buying e-bikes for the first time underestimate the importance of batteries when they research electric bikes for adults. The battery is the fuel tank of your e-bike. Leaving that out, your e-bike won’t be able to assist you, and you must use your own energy to ride. Of course, batteries come in all qualities, shapes and sizes, so there are a number of factors to consider before you commit to a new e-bike and determine which size battery is best. With most e-bikes, the bigger the battery, the better–but that’s not always the case.

How Does Battery Size Matter?

You do not want a battery that runs out on every ride, so before buying a battery for an e-bike, consider these two factors:

1. Your Expected Trip With High-Power Settings

Are you a tourist and considering going for a tour? If so, you may need a bigger battery, because there’s no guarantee that you will have the resources to recharge your battery all the time. You may also come across terrains that consume more power than you expect.

If you’re in a hilly or windy area or want to plan your tour within these types of areas, you may want to have higher power. For this, consider a bigger battery.

2. Long-Term Investment

If your e-bike is a long-term investment, think about how many miles you plan to ride and approximately how many years before your battery will need to be replaced. The battery is one of the critical components when you ask How long do electric bikes last?

At Ride1UP, batteries come with a warranty and you can even buy extended warranties for your bike ranging between 2-3 years. The battery range can be expected to reduce over time, especially depending on your use and charging habits. If you want a good range even after two years, bigger batteries are recommended.

The Range of Your E-Bike Battery

The range is basically how many miles you can travel on a single charge, and the range of the battery depends on multiple factors. In the electric bike industry, you can find battery capacities ranging all over the boar. For example, a common capacity is a ten-amp-hour battery. With this, you can roughly go twenty to forty miles on a single charge depending on common variables. You might think twenty to forty miles is a pretty broad range, and it is, but keep in mind that the range of the battery depends on a number of factors, such as:

  • How hilly the ride is
  • How windy the weather is
  • Assist level—the more you ask from the motor, the more battery you consume
  • The rider’s weight
  • Tire pressure

If you plan to go on long rides, consider investing in batteries with extended ranges. You can even get a secondary battery to double the range of a Ride1UP Roadster V2. If you are in a hilly or windy area and you are a comparatively heavier person who enjoys fast riding, consider an extended battery range. If these factors are not relevant to the majority of your rides, the industry standard will probably work fine for your needs.

Final Thoughts

The best battery size for your e-bike depends on your needs and usage. Ask yourself what range you need in regards to how you’ll use your e-bike and then find the best option for you. The experts at Ride1Up can help!
