FAQ'S

minus plus
What is a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT)? minus plus

In short, a continuous variable transmission or CVT is an internal gear hub – It takes the functionality of a traditional cassette and derailleur system and packs it all into the rear hub in an enclosed unit. There are a range of added benefits with having this kind of drivetrain that you can learn more about in this article: What is a CVT?

What Does Mid-Drive Mean on an Ebike? minus plus

A mid-drive electric bike means that the motor of the electric bike is mounted in the center of the frame near the bottom bracket, providing power to the crank. This is in contrast to hub motor designs, where the electric motor is in the front or back wheel.
The mid-drive system provides more efficient power transfer, allowing the rider to use the gears of the electric bike for a more natural riding experience and electric motor performance. The position of the motor also allows for a more stable ride as the weight is distributed closer to the center of gravity, as well as more responsive handling with greater torque and hill-climbing ability.

How Fast Can a Mid-Drive Ebike Go? minus plus

The speed of a mid-drive electric bike is dependent on several factors, such as the power output of the motor and battery capacity. Generally speaking, Class 1 and Class 2 ebikes stop assisting the rider at twenty MPH, while Class 3 ebikes, like the Prodigy, will provide assistance up to twenty-eight MPH. This ebike system has incredible performance for all riders.

Are Mid-Drive Electric Bikes More Efficient? minus plus

Yes, mid-drive ebikes are more efficient than hub motor designs. This is mainly because the electric motor is able to use the bike’s gears and the power is transferred directly to the crank instead of the wheels. This means that you can get more out of each full charge with this electric bike. Keep in mind that although mid-drive motors use the bike’s gears, this doesn’t mean you can’t ride your e-bike if the battery runs out. You just won’t have the extra power that the electric motor provides. Ebikes can still be ridden without the electric motor just like you would ride a traditional bike.

How Long Do Mid-Drive Ebike Motors Last? minus plus

The lifespan and performance of a mid-drive electric bike motor depend on the components’ quality and how it is used. Generally, you can expect your electric bike motor to last anywhere between three and ten years; just make sure to keep up with regular maintenance and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
This includes keeping your electric motor dry, as mid-drive motors tend to rust faster than their hub drive counterparts. Protecting and taking care of your ebikes will improve their lifespan and maintain their performance.

Is a Mid-Drive Ebike Better? minus plus

It depends on what kind of riding experience you are looking for. For some, a mid-drive electric bike is often considered to be the better option because they offer more efficient power transfer, better hill climbing performance, and more responsive handling by having a more natural riding feel as you pedal.
Additionally, they tend to be lighter than hub motor designs, making them a better choice for longer rides. These ebikes are also more reliable, making them a great option for regular use.
However, they tend to be the most expensive e-bike motor design, so if you’re on a budget, a hub electric motor may be a better option. Ultimately, this depends on your individual needs and preferences.

Do Any Mid-Drive E-Bikes Have a Throttle? minus plus

Yes–some mid-drive ebikes do have a throttle. However, most big electric bike companies tend to rely solely on pedal-assist for their mid-drive ebikes, because when you install a throttle on a mid-drive electric bike, the chain wear and tension might be too great. This could lead to a broken chain and render the bike inoperable, hindering the overall performance.

Can I test ride a bike? minus plus

We are a direct-to-consumer ebikes company both in pricing and strategy. Riders will generally pay a premium for the ability to test-ride ebikes through a dealer. However, our bikes have been thoroughly tested by top reviewers such as Electric Bike Review, Electric Bike Report, Cycling Weekly, CleanTechnica, Electrek, and many others who have published their reviews on YouTube. Additionally, we are now supporting an independent network of owners offering their ebikes for demos. Learn more here Locations

This article will explain all about what to expect when ordering ebikes from us. Ordering With Us

Can I upgrade the battery? minus plus

Unfortunately, this electric bike frame’s 14ah battery pack is the largest available.

Can I switch the handlebars to another model? minus plus

No. The variations you see on the site are the only options we have for our ebikes.

The design, components, and sturdiness are first rate. It’s very quiet credit to the Brose motor, CVT hub, and belt. I had some difficulties installing the front fender and finally had to use a tap. The paint had some unevenness, and the rear fender is dull slightly askew. I need to fix that eventually. Assembly (except that front fender) was ber smooth. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase, and I’d buy it again.

My wife and I purchased two Prodigy V2 bikes. My wife's is a step-through model and mine the step-over. We have put many miles on them over the past 3 months and love them. The Prodigy V2's belt drive, Enviolo transmission, and powerful Brose mid-motor were big selling points for us after experiencing the advantages of mid-motor and Enviolo hub ebikes riding through the Vienna country-side earlier this year. And the German Brose motor has not disappointed. It is quiet and give you just the right amount of boost when needed, and is adjustable depending on the terrain. The hybrid Maxxis tires are noisier than the Brose motor. The Brose motor gives the slightest hum when pushed, but is otherwise mostly silent. The Prodigy V2's frame build is solid and gives you a feeling of confidence when riding. Since I am 6' 2" in height I was worried about the fit. While I wish the handlebar mount was adjustable, I can't say that I am uncomfortable when riding. I do plan to purchase a longer seat post at some point, as I have it extended to the maximum allowed, but again it is has not caused me discomfort at this height. One issue that I have had is the Tektro brake rotor on my front rim is slightly warped or misaligned. I have had the calipers and pads adjusted and the rim trued by an expert, but the inside brake pad rubs ever so lightly on occasion. I suspect that I will have to replace the pads and rotor prematurely. One other minor issue with my bike, but not a problem with my wife's Prodigy, is the battery cover. On my Prodigy it has a hard time latching, and if I am not careful it will fall off. I have had this happen one time while riding, so I am now extremely careful to double checking that it is latched securely. Other than this, I highly recommend the Prodigy V2 to anyone looking for a mid-drive ebike.

When we go for family rides, everyone fights over who gets to ride the Prodigy v2. The Brose Mid Drive, Belt CVT, and Enviolo shifting make this one of the best spec’d e-bikes you can find, intuitive and natural to ride, all at a great value for the price.

Had this bike a little over a month with over 200 miles, i live in a hilly area and normally would not ride a bike, this bike has changed alot. I now bike to work 11 miles each way keeping it on sport and boost most of the time with a range of about 20miles on these high settings im 5-10 200lbs 32in inseam and bike fits me good-feels like a medium-large frame. My last ride i did in 28mins and a car takes 21 that was with average speed of 19mph with hills! I ride 90% road and 10% trails, it does smooth single track just fine, im going to swap to 11 -41 cassette from the 11-34 to help on very steep tight trails. Pedel strike and kickstand moving around is a reason not to take on tougher trails. I think the next generation can be slightly more slack geometry with a bit higher bottom bracket for more ground clearance -29in wheels might solve that issue. But this bike is made for the road and dirt/gravel paths. A few things i changed, 20mm shorter stem, 740mm wide bars with 50mm rise, office chair dropper post, clipless pedals, skinnier seat. I will be buying a second battery if i want to ride longer in one day, tour and eco are too slow for me but can get over 30miles on tour mode. Takes 6 hours to charge from dead. Only complaint is battery takes too long to charge. This bike is a tank a should hold up for many years the wheels are probably the weakest link, iv already hit some small jumps with no issues.

Really pleased with the belt drive and the infinite shift control. Seat post is too short and I had to order another after-market part for the bike. I’m an average sized human (5’-10” 160 lbs) but I could not adjust the seat height to create a comfortable ride.

The bike is quiet and handles well. Overall I would rate the bike a 3.5. The reasons are; there is no way to shutoff the headlight, the display is to small to see when riding and hard to tell which level of boost you are in, the fenders are to close to the tire so when you are on gravel you are constantly picking up rocks and other debris which make annoying noises on the metal fenders. Furthermore, since you only make one size frame for this bike it would be nice if you would have supplied an adjustable handle bar mounting post to allow for different size riders and riding positions. It may sound lime we do not like the bike but we do. It is just the attention to detail that is missing.

I have a unique perspective I think. My wife and I are avid cyclists. We train and race for most of the year. We also bought two Ride1Up ebikes within a week of each other. A Prodigy V2 and a much cheaper LMT’D. The LMT’D is really a 5 star bike for the price. The Prodigy V2 is a poor fit for us. The bike has the Envolo hub and it is very inefficient. This wouldn’t be a big deal for just riding slow, but we bought ebikes to cruise at speed. Because of the inefficiencies it will eat the battery, often at twice the pace of the LMT’D riding side by side. If you back off and cruise slow, then the shortcomings of the drivetrain don’t matter as much. It is a weird sensation, because the harder you pedal to help the bike the more is senses it and drains the battery. Finally, if the Prodigy runs out of juice, it is a miserable bike to pedal. We have run the Prodigy out of juice in as little as 28 miles, while the LMT’D could still go at least another 20 miles riding right next to the Prodigy. There is a good chance the Prodigy will be up for sale soon, lesson learned.

This is my second bike from R1Up. The first, an original LMT’D with cadence sensor is still going strong with over 5000 miles on it. I decided to upgrade to a mid-drive and CVT to get a more natural riding experience and increase my fitness levels.
The Prodigy V2 is a huge step up from the LMT’D. It rides so smooth, with plenty of power to tackle the biggest hills. Build quality is excellent, the bike looks great, and delivery was fast with no issues. I will say I do miss the throttle on the LMT’D. Even though I only used it from a dead stop or to power through busy intersections, I really appreciated that instant full power in those situations. I’m learning how to get a similar experience from the Prodigy using the boost setting and proper CVT setting, but its different, not bad, just different.
Overall another great experience from R1Up.

The motor and belt drive are stunningly quiet but the tires are horrible for commuting. I bought new panniers (Banjo Brothers) because standard panniers do not fit on the rack.

Under 100 miles, I had two flats from tiny shards of glass. The Maxxis tires had almost zero flat protection. I installed Schwalbe Big Ben tires and things seem fine now.

I’m looking forward to good times with this bike but those Maxxis tires were a 0/10 for commuting.
