Are the bikes water-proof? minus plus

The bikes are not water-proof, they are water-resistant. Bike came in and I rode for a few days and then the battery went out. I called customer support and they immediately approved my claim with some evidence and sent me a new battery. I have since put about 50 more miles on it and I am loving it. Folds up and fits tight in the back seat of a Honda Civic and the ride is very smooth and comfortable. I also have dumped it once on the side and after making sure everything was tightened up it still rode great. I definitely recommend this bike and company to new ebike riders!

I purchased a Portola to do some local errands and for just enjoyment and exercise. As soon as my wife tried it, I had to purchase a second one. In less than a month, I have over 100 miles. I have not been riding a bike for years and this bike not only helped me get back into the sport/shape, but this is such a high quality bike that already from time to time I find that I can turn off the PAS. I have topped 30MPH in class 3 PAS 5. Without the 8 speed shifting, I don't think that would have been possible. I love the higher quality smooth 8 speeds of this bike. Just riding the Portola in bike mode only, is very comfortable. Our local area has a lot of steep hills and the PAS modes have no issues navigating them. We have also purchased some 40 gal storage bins from Walmart to put the bikes in the bins when we transport them for camping or for trail rides in local parks. They fit perfect and we are planning to take them on a camping trip in a week. I think I will get a rear basket soon so I can do some errands to the local shops/grocery. So much better than having to take the car. Great product and I am sure I will get many years of enjoyment out of them.

I like everything but the cadence sensor. For a few dollars more they could use a torque sensor that would be much safer to ride.

  1. Jon

I would give it 4 1/2 stars if that were an option. I’ve really enjoyed riding it.

I did a fair amount of research before getting the bike. My initial criteria were (1) folding, so it could fit in the back of my Chevy Bolt without needing to get a bike rack, and (2) electric, since given my limited experience with electric bikes, I figured an e-bike would be more fun than my road bike and a more compelling alternative to a car for shorter trips around town. Both expectations have been met with flying colors.

I think the closest contender in terms of quality and price is the one from Lectric, and I was debating between the two, but the Portola won out primarily for two reasons:

    1. The battery can be taken out easily without folding the bike. Given where and how I have to store the bike, folding it every time I needed to remove the battery would have been a major pain.
    2. According to the reviews I read, Portola has higher quality and/or better components, including the motor, the derailleur, the grips, and the battery housing. I haven’t been disappointed.

A third reason that I didn’t expect is that I think the Portola is just a better-looking bike. The geometry is attractive, the paint finish is gorgeous (I got the dark blue), and I think it just presents a nicer profile overall.

Other things I appreciate are the general solid feel, the sturdy tires, the powerful brakes, the thumb throttle, the integrated rear rack, the standard mount for the bottle cage, the rear brake light, the cushioned front fork, the sturdy kickstand (that never gets in the way of the pedals), and the comfortable seat. The power controls on the handlebars are also very intuitive and easy to use. I’m definitely enjoying it, and I got a second one for my wife. (We can fit both bikes in our Chevy Bolt with the rear seats folded down.)

It’s easy (enough) to fold, and light (enough) to heft into the back of the car, and the restraining strap when folded is nice. Of course, you always want a bigger battery (I got the 13.4AH option), but given the current state of technology, it’s OK.

I was concerned about whether or not it would be tall enough for me (I’m 6’1”), but, luckily, the bike came with a 400 mm seat tube instead of the listed 350 mm, and at full height plus a little bit more, I can almost get full extension. (An option to swap out the seat tube for a 450 mm would have been appreciated, however.)

Why not five stars? Just a few little details.

    – Given the power assist, I think the gears could be designed better. That is, at level 5 in class 3, you have to pedal really (overly?) fast to get to top speed, and a larger front sprocket (and/or smaller rear) would be very handy. For everyday riding, I stay in 8th gear and just use the thumb throttle to start from a standstill, so the lower seven gears don’t get used much. For off-road, some of the lower gears are useful, but I think a different configuration—fewer low gears, higher high gears—would take better advantage of the power that is available.
    – The battery management could be better. Maybe that’s impractical at this price point, but since the battery is such a key and expensive component, the system could be more helpful. For example:
    – – I tend to charge the battery out of the bike, but the only indicators I have on the battery itself are four lights. But on the bike itself, the battery indicator has five bars (or three full bars and two half bars, but I assume they are supposed to be even gradations). So, every 20% vs. every 25%, but what are the max and min for each level? For example, I took out my battery to charge when it was at 2 bars (so, 40%?), but the lights on the battery showed 3 out of 4 (so 75%?). At least having an actual number on the LED unit would be helpful.
    – – Also, the owner’s manual talks about charging your battery to 80% for optimal storage—but there’s no practical way to stop the charging at 80% unless you check it constantly while charging—and, if you check it and it’s at 4 bars, it could presumably at 70%, or maybe even 90%, so…?
    – – Bottom line: it would be useful to know, on a scale of 100% rather than just a scale of 5 (or 4), what the actual charge level is, and it would be very helpful to be able to set the max charge level to 80%.
    – A few parts seem to be on the delicate side and wouldn’t require much of a tumble to break, for example, the thumb throttle, the headlight wire, and the LED power control. (I’m glad they added the derailleur guard for more protection on the side.)

How does the bike* fit? Please share your height/size and the frame type you ordered, if applicable. See discussion above. (I'm 6'1"; it came with a 400mm seat tube; the fit is *almost* tall enough).

Great quality and performance. I researched for a long time and decided on the Portola. Bought one for myself and my wife. We are not disappointed. Bikes arrived in perfect condition, easy to put together, and everything was adjusted correctly. I could tell they took the time to ensure appropriate quality control. Wish the seat was more comfortable and better quality but I guess that is subjective anyway so it did not affect my rating.

Torque sensor might be the last preferred feature. Besides turn signals would probably help.

Good bike. It shipped with a dent in the front fender that I have not been able to fix without it rubbing the front wheel, so had to remove.

How does the bike* fit? Please share your height/size and the frame type you ordered, if applicable. I’m 5’9 and the bike fits me well. However, the front handlebars are not adjustable, which would make the seating position better. My wife owns a Velotric fold which has adjusting handle bars which allows it to better fit the rider.

Assembly was more difficult than necessary (extremely hard to unfold, illustrations on quick start card inadequate). My wife is generally pleased with the riding experience, although here in upstate New York there has been limited suitable weather.
